Comment: I purchased a split level home this summer, where the lower level is fully finished. The lower/basement level has a persistent musty smell that is stronger after rain. The smell is particularly strong in one closet and coming from any portal that leads to the interior structure of the house, for instance near the radiant head distribution, the open space around the circuit breakers, and some small patches of drywall that have evidence of previous rot. Basically, anything that you might consider to be "inside the walls" has a strong smell that diffuses out into the rest of the lower level. No obvious mold growth, no standing water, no major evidence of wet rot.
