In the spring of 2020, heavy rains in and around Cleveland inundated basements in surrounding suburbs. In the town of Beachwood alone, there were more than 100 flooded basements (Cleveland.com). It was not coincidental that this happened in the spring. Ohio’s weather contributes to flooding in basements in a number of ways. When April rains meet melting snow while the ground is saturated or when a summer thunderstorm pounds streams and rivers that are already running high, your basement may be threatened. Additionally, spring ice jams, storms from the Gulf of Mexico hitting southern Ohio, and Lake Erie in the north can contribute to above-average precipitation.
Other factors can play a role in whether your basement gets wet, such as the age of your home and the grading around the foundation. If your home is in a floodplain, low elevation, or simply has poor exterior drainage, your basement may flood every time it rains. If you are in a more urban area, city sewer backups and blockages can contribute to flooding and stormwater can seep in through walls and windows. It’s enough to keep any Ohio homeowner without a waterproofing system up at night! If your basement is flooded, you will want to make sure the cleanup addresses all materials and structures, including drywall to prevent mold. The next step will be to prevent future damage with a professional basement waterproofing installation.

Comment: Wet basement
Project Location: Johnstown, OH 43031
Comment: Hydrostatic pressure causing water seepage up through the concrete. Walls are not affected. It seems that water gets past footers and comes up from under the floor only. We had builder try to remedy. They added a second sump pump to try to pump out excess water. They thought it would dry up once it took care of it but that one still fills up and pumps out. They added a small French drain just to one are and tied it to the original sump pump. Then they applied a vapor barrier and epoxy seal coat. Now water is bubbling under the epoxy in some areas and causing sediment to build still. We don't know the solution! Maybe you can help
