Why Do Vermont Basements & Crawl Spaces Get Wet?

Flooded basement: With summer rainfall and winter snow, Vermont homes can be exposed to serious flooding issues. When flooding hits your area, your basement is most likely to be the prime target for water damage.

Other wet basement signs: There are many possible sources for pooling water, damp basement walls or flooring, and high humidity. These include: rusty basement windows, poor grading around the foundation, leaks through cracks in the foundation, saturated soils, simple plumbing failures, and poorly functioning drainage or sump pump systems. A basement already musty and damp is ill-prepared for the next bad rainstorm! Basement waterproofing can address the underlying issues, prevent future water damage and improve the indoor air quality.

"I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for the hard work which has gone into my basement this past week. I am aware that climbing into dimly lit and poorly ventilated concrete slab for jack-hammering, is not the most glorious work. I commend Daryn, Steve, and Danny for doing this without a complaint. Their professionalism, execution, and quickness of work was pretty amazing considering the laborious task they were undertaking. Likewise, I would like to thank Jamie in the office for helping to ease us through this process, and Kevin for beginning the whole job. We are looking forward to working with your company and especially Matt in the garage, as he also demonstrated a high level of professionalism when he and Brandon were here."

Kim M. from Jericho, VT had plans to expand the living space in her home by finishing the basement. There was, however, one thing getting in the way of that expansion: a crack in the basement wall that was, she later learned a sign of structural damage. The basement wall was in fact beginning to bow inwards. A friend of the family advised her to call Matt Clark's Northern Basement Systems, and when she looked us up on the Internet, she found so much information about the problem she was experiencing, that she felt confident about hiring us for the job. In this video she talks about the experience:"They were completely on time, they did exactly what they said they were going to do.They don't pressure you, they don't tell you you need things you don't." , says Kim. "It is just really reassuring because they know what they're doing and you know you are not getting ripped off."

The best decision I have made was to have Matt Clark's Northern Basement Systems replace the sump pump in my basement. I have had so much stress lifted off my shoulders since the new pump was installed last February. You hardly hear it run and it dos a wonderful job. It has given me the added comfort of having the battery backup to be able to leave the house for long periods of time during a storm and not having to worry that the pump may go out and the pump will not be working. In the past I have had to get the generator going! From the young man that came and did the initial assessment, to the team that came and installed it, I was surprised by their professionalism. Today, the pipes were buried in the yard and you can't even hardly tell where they are! Exceptional Service!!! I will highly recommend Northern Basements!!

This was a very good company to work with. I worked directly with Matt Clark and he was very responsive and accommodating. The only service I had was encapsulation of a basement that has a dirt floor and "knee walls" in a seasonal residence. I needed to reduce a very bad humidity problem that developed. The crew did a very good job of leveling the dirt and removing large stones prior to installing the mat and liner. I highly recommend the mat, as it provides an additional layer of protection to support the liner. It has been one week since the installation. Unfortunately, while the musty smell is gone, the humidity problem is still an issue because the surface of the liner is wet from condensation (no pipes are leaking). I believe the purpose of the liner is to reduce, not completely eliminate, the temperature difference that leads to the humidity. So I will use a dehumidifier for awhile and see if that eliminates the condensation problem. If it does, it will leave me wondering whether I spent a lot of money to encapsulate the basement when all I needed was to run a dehumidifier! The basement walls have some foam insulation that runs the perimeter at the top of the walls, but it may turn out that I need to add more insulation. Time will tell - one step at a time!

Project Location: Poultney, VT 05764

Comment: Our small basement recently flooded after a storm that we learned dropped over 2.5 inches of rain in a short amount of time. We're not sure what happened - we have a sump pump, which is old, but after we pumped water out and plugged the pump back in, it kicked in. So we're not sure if it became overwhelmed, or if the float stuck... or? We'd like to look at getting a new pump with battery backup, and discuss options. Thanks!

Last and most severely this July with hurricane Beryl (about 7" of standing water). Likely looking for a remediation system (sump/drain) to prevent this from happening again, the waters appear to come from up from the floor when the water table gets too saturated after extreme events. 3/4 walls are underground. Home built into a ledge, which continues uphill behind the house a ways (pictures of front/back). In front picture, what looks like the ground floor is the walk-out basement.
