Have you ever noticed a damp or musty smell in your Alabama home? Have you seen your home energy cost skyrocket during hot summer months? Have you also seen any critters living in your crawl space? These symptoms are a direct result of having a vented crawl space under your home.
The crawl space air is bad. It is damp. It is cold if it's winter. It is full of mold spores. It smells. And this crawl space air is in your building envelope. You are breathing it. In fact we know that up to 50% of the air that you breathe on the first floor of your house came through your crawl space.
It was once thought that adding vents to a crawl space was helpful - that vents would allow cold or hot air to pass in and out and eventually dissipate. But the truth is that the vents actually promote air in one of two ways - the stack effect (natural tendency to draw air in from lower levels upward into living spaces), or the HVAC system through your ducts. So venting crawl space is not a solution, and can make the problem even worse.
To eliminate the dirt crawl space from having any negative effects on the rest of the house, Basement Systems, the world leader in dry basement and crawl space technology, developed the CleanSpace System, an ultimate solution to vented dirt crawl spaces. The CleanSpace system with our patented crawl space vapor barrier

Comment: We bought a new house 2 months ago and the general contractor put black poly on the dirt in the crawl space leaving approximately a one foot uncovered space between the edge of the plastic and the block walls. There are vents in the crawl space walls that open and close. We're concerned about this setup.
