I have an enclosed area (used to be a garage)on slab whose floor elevation is 5.4" below the Base Flood Elevation for my neighborhood. The area of this space is 304 square feet. Exterior walls are studs, 16" on center with sheetrock covered interior and brick covered exterior. The top of the footing on which the brick rests and grade in this area is 9.4" below the Base Flood Elevation. I assume the bottom of the flood vents can be no lower than the floor elevation of the enclosure. What I'm more concerned about is cutting a rectangular hole in the brick wall, leaving 16" of brick unsupported except for the vent frame. Is the stainless steel frame sturdy enough to prevent cracks developing in the brick wall above the vent?
