This Vienna, VA home Was suffering from an uninsulated exposed crawlspace that was at risk of developing serious water damage and mold growth. Our sales professional Pedro went out to the property to perform his full home inspection and give the homeowner the best solutions to their problems. He found the biggest problems to be the ventilation that allowed uncontrolled unconditioned air to go directly into the crawlspace and the lack of insulation in the crawlspace that, alongside the ventilation, was creating the perfect environment for mold growth and water damage. Pedro explained to the homeowners that the best option to fix these daunting issues would be to fully encapsulate the crawlspace. When the homeowners agreed our services crews went out to the house to get started installing the vent covers and clearing out all the dirt and debris within the crawlspace that was preventing them from installing the new insulation. Then when the obstructions were clear they got to work taking down the old useless plastic tarps that had been the only source of insulation in the crawlspace previously. Finally, the crews got to work installing the CleanSpace insulation system. They started by laying down TerraBlock floor insulation that prevents any moisture underneath from passing through the barrier. Then they installed the CleanSpace cover on the walls and top of the TerraBlock as an additional layer of moisture protection. Finally, they used spray foam insulation on the rim joists to fully encapsulate the crawlspace.
The design of most crawl spaces includes vents that allow air to openly move from outside to in and inside to out. This allows dust, allergens and even pests to be able to enter the space below a home. The air in these crawl spaces eventually works its way into the rooms and living areas of the home above. One of the most common suggestions we make for any crawl space project is to cover, insulated and air seal these vents. creating a controlled environment in a crawl space by limiting the outside influence helps to improve air quality and the energy efficiency of the space. Here we used Silver Glo insulation paneling, cut to fit the vent and Zyp Foam to seal around the edges.
This Fairfax, VA crawlspace was nearly unusable to the owners of this home with dirt floors, no waterproofing, and a lack of insulation this area of the home was nearly not just useless but detrimental to the comfort of the home. Due to the nonexistent insulation and lack of waterproofing uncontrolled air and moisture were able to easily seep into the home. This was causing some rooms to be too hot or too cold and was significantly increasing the risk of mold growth or even water damage. When our sales professional went out he completed a full home inspection and determined that the best course of action would be to completely encapsulate the crawlspace. Our crews went out to the home flattened the dirt floor, applied ZypFoam to any potential air leaks, installed TerraBlock floor insulation, and applied CleanSpace covering to the walls and floor to keep moisture and condensation out.
We turned this nasty crawl space into a clean space with controlled air flow and better impact on the energy efficiency of the home. Removing the old insulation attached to the crawl space ceiling, clearing the plastic on the floors and then installing a moisture barrier and Clean Space to seal it all in made this crawl space have better air quality and allow for use of the space if storage is needed by the homeowners. The foundation supports of the home were air sealed to keep moisture below and the rim joists of the home were sealed with spray Foam.
This home in Stafford Virginia had a wet and cold crawl space. The extra humidity lead to areas with mold growth and the existing insulation had become home to some unwanted pests. The old insulation was falling in section making the floors above cold and a lack of air sealing was allowing nasty, musty air to leak into the home and rooms above. Our Certified Home Performance Sales Pro Jaron visited to perform a free inspection and was able to design a project to help. Here is what it looked like before and after our team was able to transform the crawl space with a vapor barrier, ground insulation, closed off vents and air sealed rim joists.
