Dirt crawl spaces often equates to a damp crawl space. Since soil naturally holds water, as it evaporates, it does so in the contained space, leading to musty smells. A plastic liner seems like it could do the trick trapping the moisture from the ground, but what it doesn’t account for is the potential for mold to grow, or for a place for the trapped water to go. That’s why we installed CleanSpace in this Hartford, MI crawl space. The CleanSpace liner is twice as thick as traditional liners, and is flexible and durable. It’s manufactured with an antimicrobial additive to prevent the growth of mold on the liner. CleanSpace allows for water to drain beneath the liner. When these Westphalia, MI residents started noticing a strange odor in their kitchen, they set about to locating the source. They found the answer in their crawl space and weren’t too happy with the discovery. They had already known that the crawl space was dealing with previous issues. Included in the package, are several different types of insulation: The SilverGlo wall insulation and spray foam are both seen in the after photo, and a Terrablock foam insulation rests on the floor underneath the vapor barrier. With these products working together, the crawlspace temperature should no longer be an issue. All of these items have another role in the project, as well. That is their ability to stop outside air - the main culprit for humidity, mold and bad odors - from coming in.  As a package, the Ultimate Energy Saver will protect these homeowners from moldy smells and overspending on heating costs. 

The customer called us because their water softener emptied directly into their crawl space, with the water then pumped out by the sump pump. This was causing a lot of problems, from a damp and gross crawl space to mold appearing on the baseboards in the house above.

In addition to installing a new sump pump and water discharge system, we encapsulated the crawl space with the CleanSpace vapor barrier system. We also installed SmartJacks throughout the space to reinforce the support beams compromised by all of the moisture in the crawl space.
